What is your favorite non bread machine bread recipe?
I need to make homemade bread to bring to Thanksgiving. I have never made any bread but banana and zucchini. I do not have a bread machine, so I need a recipe that does not use one. What is your favorite? Whatever one I make will get best answer!!

- Well, I don't know if you would count this, because you CAN put it in a bread machine. I bake mine in the oven. It comes in a clear bag....Red River brand. It is sold in grocery stores and healthfood stores. I love to make the potato bread. Easy, and definitely tastes like homemade. I used to buy potato bread from the Amish, and this is the exact same. Instructions are given for bread machine AND making by hand/using reg. oven. Happy Thanksgiving!
- Well my fav recipe is for plain white bread... Go to Allrecipes.com and then search Amish white Bread....its got 5 stars and over 1000 reviews. it is super good , i made some the other night and almost ate the whole loaf....i would reduce the sugar to 1/4 cup though. Another good one is Jo's Rosemary Bread...also on Allrecipes.com....ever had the bread from Macaroni Grill?...thats what this tastes like. Hope your bread making goes good. I too am bringing bread for Thanksgiving... :)
- Two loaves of bread - crisp of crust and tender of crumb. 1 pkg. active dry yeast 1 c. lukewarm water 2 tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt 1/4 c. Crisco 1 c. hot milk 5 to 6 c. enriched flour Soften yeast in 1/4 cup of the lukewarm water for 5 minutes, then stir until blended. Measure sugar, salt and Crisco into mixing bowl, pour hot milk over them and stir, mashing Crisco against sides of bowl until broken into small lumps. Add remaining water and cool to lukewarm. Stir in 1 cup flour. Add yeast and 2 more cups flour and beat with a wooden spoon until batter is smooth and elastic. Stir in 1 1/2 to 2 cups more flour, then, with floured fingers, work in enough additional flour to make a soft dough that does not stick to the fingers. Turn dough onto lightly floured board and knead for 2 minutes, about 100 kneading strokes. Shape dough into a ball and put it in a bowl rubbed with Canola oil. Spread surface of dough lightly with Canola oil, cover with a towel and let dough rise until double in bulk, in a warm draft free place about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Punch dough down and turn onto floured board. Cut dough in half and shape each half into a smooth ball. Shape each ball into a loaf and put into bread pan rubbed with Canola oil seam side down. Cover pans with a smothe kitchen towel and let bread rise in a warm draft free place until the sides of the raised bread reach the top of the pans and the center is nicely rounded above it, about 1 hour. To bake: Bake loaves at 400 degrees for 25 to 28 minutes, or until golden brown. And the loaf has a hollow sound when thumped on bottom When baked: Turn loaves from pans immediately to keep crust crisp, and cool on a cake rack. For a soft, tender crust: Brush loaves with Canola oil or melted butter as soon as they come from oven. This is a good one hope you like it. jim b PS. You can cut each ball of dough in half then using the palms of your hands roll each 1/2 into a log shape about 1 inch longer than the length of your bread pans brush off any excess flour lay logs side by side pinch the ends togeather and give them a couple of twist to form your loaf of bread place in pans to rise the second time. ------------------------------------------------------- Or another good way would be to form or roll the ball of dough into a rectangle slightly wider than the length of pan, brush off excess flour roll up jelly roll fashion pinch seam together and place in pan seam side down. I hope you injoy making your home made bread. -----------------------------------------------------------
